Friday Formation is our monthly Bible study, usually meeting on the second Friday of a month at 7.30 pm at the Parsonage (Schützenstr. 2). In the past topics have included Women in the Bible and Unlikely Biblical Heroes and Heroines. Future topics are discussed and agreed with the group. Some attendants are regulars, others occasional visitors. Fr. Chris asks to know in advance who is planning on coming as refreshments are provided.
Friday 28th April 2017 will be the start of a series on the “hidden books of the Bible,” or to use the Greek term, the Apocrypha. These books – including Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, additional sections of Daniel, Macabees and Psalm 151 – are considered non-canonical (i.e. not part of Scripture) by most Protestant Churches, deuterocanonical (belonging to the second canon) by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and the Church of the East, while Anglicans accept “the Apocrypha for instruction in life and manners, but not for the establishment of doctrine” (Article VI in the Thirty-Nine Article). We will look at their history and background, how they have influenced Christianity, how they are used today, and will read some of the shorter books and/or extracts.
