All Saints’ Walk
On All Saints’ Day, the Mainz Ministry Team is offering a walk with readings and prayers related to death and funeral customs in ancient and modern times. We will begin at 3 pm at the Friedhof Mainz-Weisenau (main entrance) and walk past former Roman burial sites, Napoleonic execution sites, and early modern churchyards, ending outside St. Stephan’s Church. The end will be in time to attend the ministry’s Evening Prayer service at St. Christopher’s.
To reach the starting point of the walk, participants from Wiesbaden can take S8 at 14:18 from Wiesbaden Hbf to Mainz Römisches Theater, arriving at 14:34. Here they can join participants who start from elsewhere and take Bus 65, departing the bus stop in front of the Bahnhof at 14:43, arriving at Mainz-Weisenau Wilhelm-Theodor-Römheld-Str. at 14:55. The bus stop is located across the street from the cemetery entrance. Limited parking is available on Heiligkreuzweg in Weisenau, but as the walk ends in downtown Mainz, it would necessitate walking back alone approximately 3 km from the end of the walk to the parking space.
Half the readings are taken from the Bible, the other four are from Augustus Caesar, Augustine of Hippo, Edward Gibbon, and the Archdeacon of London (1855). Prayers are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.
